Abstract :

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a tool to study the universe when it was very young. has been possible due to very high energy density created by the LHC machine in a controlled fashion in the laboratory. The technological feat achieved for colliding protons with very energy is matched by the large scale multipurpose experiments which use equally commendable cutting edge technology. The second phase of LHC is scheduled to start in the middle of 2015. The most spectacular result harvested from the LHC so far has been the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, which brought the Nobel prize for physics in 2013 to the scientists who hypothesized such a particle several decades earlier. We shall elucidate on the basic idea about the Higgs boson and briefly describe how it was discovered.
