Collective modes in the neutron star inner crust and in trapped Fermi gases

Abstract :

In the inner crust of neutron stars, clusters of nuclear matter are embedded in a dilute neutron gas. At typical neutron-star temperatures, both the clusters and the neutron gas are superfluid. In spite of the completely different scales, there are a lot of analogies between the physics of neutron stars and of ultracold gases of trapped fermionic atoms. The following three subjects will be addressed in the talk: (1) description of low-energy collective excitations in the neutron-star inner crust within superfluid hydrodynamics and their effect on the specific heat; (2) temperature effects on the collective modes of trapped Fermi gases in the superfluid phase due to coupling between the superfluid and the normal component consisting of thermally excited quasiparticles; (3) collisional effects on the collective modes of trapped Fermi gases in the normal phase.
