Written Test and Interviews for Selecting Ph.D. Students


The next round of selection of students for the doctoral program of the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, will be held in November 2022.

The process of selection will consist of a written test and an interview. Both the written test and the interviews will be held online. 

The applicants will be shortlisted for the written test based on the following criteria:

  1. Valid GATE Score Card (issued in 2020, 2021, and 2022).

  2. Valid CSIR or UGC–JRF award letter (valid till 2022).

  3. Valid JEST award letter indicating the rank.

  4. Candidates with a valid provisional offer letter issued by DST for the award of INSPIRE fellowship pertaining to the Ph.D. programme.

  5. CFTI candidates (M.Sc., integrated M.Sc., B.S.-M.S. Dual degree,  B.Tech.) with CGPA of 8.0 and above for all categories.

  6. M.Tech. from CFTIs with a good academic record (with CGPA 8.0 and above) for all categories.

If you are shortlisted for the written test, you would be contacted by the Online Testing Agency for a mock test.

The entrance test will be conducted by the online agency "Codetantra". Shortlisted candidates will be registered on the portal shortly. They will receive an OTP email from upon registration. Use the OTP email to set a password for your account. The same account will be used to attempt the mock test and final test.

The written test will be held on November 17, 2022. The duration of the test would be ninety minutes and it will be held during 5:00-6:30 PM.

There will be another shortlisting based on the performance in the written test. The interviews for the candidates shortlisted based on the written test will be held during November 25-27, 2022.
