Course Contents :
Diffraction of light waves at a straight edge. Diffraction at a thin wire. Interference of light in thin curved air film. Cornu?s fringes. Young?s modulus of the material of a rectangular bar. Interference of polarized light waves. Babinet?s compensator and its calibration. Refractive index of a liquid: temperature variation (Abbe refractometer). Young?s modulus: thin cantilever bar and a strain gauge. Field distribution in an electromagnet: search coil method. Variation of electrical resistance with pressure: hot filament Pirani gauge. Magnetic susceptibility of liquids: Quincke?s method. Michelson?s interferometer: Experiments with a laser source. Dielectric constant by capacitance meter. Mutual inductance: Anderson?s bridge. Workshop on testing of optical components.
