ABSTRACT :
The ever-growing demand of high-speed information technology leads to the birth of photonic crystals (PhCs) with which one can control photons whose role in photonics is like that of electrons in electronics, giving a way to promote the speed of information transmission and processing. PhCs are materials that can serve as platforms for all devices for millimeter wave and microwave circuits as well as optical integrated circuits, e.g., waveguides, cavities, mirrors, filters, antennae, lasers, modulators, demodulators, switches, frequency converters, polarization converters, circulators, isolators, optical diodes, optical transistors, power dividers / combiners, and logic devices. So, PhCs can bring human society a novel photonic information age. This talk will provide a guidance to students and researchers about the basic concepts of PhCs, basic theoretical methods for investigations of PhCs, basic methods for fabrication of PhCs, and various applications or devices based on PhCs.
