Program Overview

Open to students with a strong masters level background in physics. Exceptional students with a B.Tech/BE degree are also eligible for this program. During the first year the students need to complete a set of mandatory courses and clear comprehensive examination at the end of the year.

Selection Process

The students are selected through a written test and interview conducted by the department. Those who have qualified at lease one of GATE/JEST/NET are eligible to apply. Guide allocation procedure followed by the Department: When number of vacancies are small, the department will send a list of faulty with vacancies to all the selected students. On joining the students should choose the guide(s) from this list.

Structure of the Program

Students coming in with a master degree need to take minimum of two core courses and two elective courses . The doctoral committee could prescribe more courses if required. Students entering the Ph.D. program directly after their BE/B.Tech. should take a minimum of ten courses which include two core, two courses on special topics related to the student's thesis work and six electives. In all cases comprehensive viva is conducted at the end of first year.
