Fossil fuel sources are limited and have been consumed quickly leading to the search of alternative energy sources. Among all the alternative energy sources hydrogen energy was considered to be the best to replace the fossil fuel. Fuel cell which converts chemical energy of the fuel to electrical energy is one of the energy conversion technologies utilizing the hydrogen energy. Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is a type of fuel cell which has high power density, quick start-stop capability and low working temperature. But the cost catalyst and slow reaction kinetics at cathode hinders the commercialization of PEMFC. In the present talk, I will discuss about the basics of PEMFC and methods attempted to overcome the challenges in PEMFC.
